First post – A slice of my recent past

ok where do start?…

first there was a BIG bang … well maybe not that far back …

First there was a lump on … shall we say a delicate part of me and I was a little worried so I went to the doctors and he didn’t have a clue (but to be fair he is “only” a GP) so he thinks it may be a sexually transmitted something, and as I have been in a stable relationship for over 12 years at this point I was then worried about two things.

So off I go to the hospital to the GUM unit (that’s clap clinic to the rest off us) and they poke prod and take samples, after much scratching of heads and a little disbelief at my insistence that I haven’t been unfaithful and my insistence that my beautiful partner wouldn’t have done that they gave me a weeks course of wide spectrum antibiotics and an appointment to come back a fortnight later to get my results and discuss the results.

Fast forward a fortnight and another late night appointment (did you know they open until 8pm!) they have got all the results bar one and they are all clear, the drugs seem to have helped so they give me a fortnights supply and an appointment to go back in three and a half weeks… the last test result would be back by then (it was the HIV just in case you’re wondering – and yes that was yet another worry)

Fast forward three weeks (and a couple of days)
Some good news at last … I don’t have HIV J however they have no idea what I do have so off to the accident and emergency department with a letter from the GUM unit in hand (you meet some interesting people in A & E at night, but that’s a story for another blog)

I get to see the consultant urologists and they have no idea either but ask me to come back and plan to stay a week or so for them to do some test…

So a week off work and a little off my … erm delicate areas later they let me know I need to talk to a Mr McIntyre in the MRI (Manchester Royal Infirmary)

At this point I’m still in the dark there has been mention of tumours but all has been shrouded in that dark art known as Doctor speak Greek (I know it’s really Latin before anyone corrects me) but this is quickly cleared up by Mr McIntyre at his clinic … yep another day off work but I have to say work and especially my boss has been really good about this…
… so back to Mr McIntyre sat in his office he explains that the biopsy that they took on the first stay in has been on a long journey from the MRI to Christies Hospital and because no one in living memory at either place has ever seen this type of tumour (yes he said that word … but I did tell him I was ok with it) is VERY rare and he believes that the best option to cut out / off as much as we can and then go forward from there.
